Here’s a gothic love story that collides with the start of the U.S.-Mexican War and the discovery of vampires, all set in the Rio Grande Valley in the 1840s. This spooky season, AARP Texas invites you to join MACRI for a special virtual conversation about Vampires of El Norte, by Isabel Cañas. The book surrounds the reader with visions of the chaparral filled with anacahuita trees, javelinas, and the sounds of chicharras and chachalacas in this supernatural South Texas western.
MACRI chose this novel for its portrayal of the challenges Tejanos faced during a time of major socio-political change. What would become of the Tejano ranching way of life? What would happen to the rights of people of Mexican descent in the wake of the war? Guests will discuss all this and more!
Guests speakers include:
🎃 Erika Prosper, First Lady of San Antonio & Rio Grande Valley native
🎃 Daniel Ibarra, Palo Alto Battlefield National Historical Park
🎃 Carmen Alvarez, Bookstagrammer
🧛🏼 This event will livestream on: MACRI’s YouTube channel.
