Improving Walk & Roll Options in Downtown White River Junction
About the Event
Join AARP Vermont, Vital Communities, Bugbee Senior Center and community partners for a training focused on improving walkability options in White River Junction. This is an age-friendly, interactive workshop geared for those who want to improve walkability options.
In this public event, America Walks will train residents on how to evaluate walkability conditions and opportunities to develop community demonstration projects that can lead to lasting changes in a streetscape. To learn more about Demonstration Projects, click here.
This workshop is free, and all ages and abilities are welcome. Space is limited and registration is required.
Agenda:
• 9:00 am: Coffee and networking
• 9:15 am: Welcome
• 9:30 am: Road design, pedestrian infrastructure, and traffic calming
• 10:30 am: Developing/facilitating a Quick-Build
• 11:30 am Planning and coordinating a walk audit (small-group discussions).
• 12:00 pm: Lunch is Provided
• 12:30 pm: Walk/Roll Audit:
o Two Different Walk Options are provided, one of which will be shorter and fully accessible; with the other walk being slightly longer.
• 1:30 pm: Observations, mobility gaps, and ideas for improvement
• 2:00 pm: Engaging officials, movement-building, and organizing for change
• 3:00pm: workshop review and closing
Workshop Goals:
- Engage and empower residents to identify walkability and mobility gaps in their communities.
- Increase awareness and understanding of pedestrian safety challenges through hands-on walk audits and toolkit-based observations.
- Foster collaboration among local partners, elected officials, and service providers to support safer, more accessible streets for all users.
- Inspire a low-cost demonstration project that showcases possible design interventions and solutions to enhance walkability.
- Build momentum for future improvements by using the workshop to catalyze partnerships and future funding or implementation.
- Create a replicable model that can be adapted by other Vermont communities with similar needs.
