New York's Gilded Age with Francine Segan, Food Historian - Wed., 11/13/24
Join AARP New York and attendees from across the U.S. for a FREE virtual event on Wed., November 13, 2024, at 6:00pm ET | 5:00pm CT | 4:00pm MT | 3:00pm PT to learn more about the Gilded Age.
This 90-minute virtual program, New York’s Gilded Age, will be provided by Francine Segan, Food Historian. The program includes the elegant dinner parties of NYC’s elite like the Astors and Vanderbilts as well as the foods and dining customs of NYC’s more than 419,000 immigrants.
The presentation will include the origins of the era’s new food creations like Dr. Brown’s celery soda, pastrami, margarine, Welsh’s grape juice and Philadelphia cream cheese. It will also cover the history of NYC’s restaurants back then such as Delmonico’s and the city’s oldest pub: the Fraunces Tavern, which opened in 1762. Each participant will receive a handout with recipes and information of the era.
