Henry David Thoreau famously wrote that “In wildness is the preservation of the world.” How then, does one go about keeping the forests, lakes, shores, and summits of Acadia in pristine condition, especially considering the National Park Service’s national mandate to accommodate all visitors? Friends of Acadia does it through direct employee support as well as one-time grants and regular support for park crews including Acadia’s Exotic Plant Management Team. From real-time water quality monitoring on Jordan Pond, to support for the Wild Gardens of Acadia, to expansive watershed studies in Bar Harbor and Southwest Harbor, to restoration of a forested wetland after removal of a malfunction septic system, FOA programs are aimed at preserving the environmental integrity of this special place. Guests will include FOA’s Wild Acadia coordinator, a member of the park’s invasives team, and a representative of the Wild Gardens.
