Walking As Practice with AARP Texas

Make walking your fun habit by joining AARP Texas in a free, eight-week training program with Walking as Practice in Austin that’s suitable for all ages and fitness levels. Starting in February and culminating in a group 10K walk on April 5*, the program includes weekly in-person walking sessions at Vic Mathias Shores along with online coaching from a certified personal trainer. Each participant will receive a training workbook and other fun SWAG!

TRAINING TOPICS TO BE COVERED (not exhaustive)

  • Timed mile (three times to demonstrate progress/improvement)
  • Heart Rate (HR) monitoring
  • Interval and strength training (introduce Frequency, Intensity, & Duration)
  • Tips on training for distance events (what to expect)
  • Safe and effective stretching techniques
  • Proper clothing and footwear (injury prevention)
  • Sleep and nutrition-related information


* Registrants must sign up for the Capitol 10K. There will be an AARP Team link in participant workbook.
