As we age, an active lifestyle combined with regular exercise leads to better brain function and overall wellness. Join AARP Oregon and Barbara Deurwaarder for an hour-long adaptive/gentle yoga virtual class every Wednesday at 10am. If you want to gently and gradually increase flexibility or introduce greater mobility in your daily life this is a great place to start. These sessions are designed for people of varied abilities and is performed using a chair and includes some standing poses. Modifications are also given to assist the participant. Mindfulness, meditation and breathing are integral to the practice. It is helpful to have a folding chair or a chair without arms for this session. If you have one or two 4“ x 6“ x 9“ inch foam yoga blocks, do keep them handy. You may also want a rolled bath towel and a yoga strap (at least 8’ long).
Please consult your physician before beginning any exercise program. The class is delivered virtually via the Zoom platform and is free for AARP members and guests. Each participant must complete this pre-registration and waiver prior to joining the yoga sessions. Upon registration you will be send the link for the weekly class. If you would like to invite a guest to this event, they will need to register themselves directly to agree to the liability waiver.
Yoga sessions are be held at 10 am on Wednesday and Saturdays in Dec 1, 4, 8, 11, 15, 18, 22, 29. Please note we will not have class on Dec 25th.
About Barbara: Barbara Deurwaarder has practiced yoga for over 12 years. She recently received her 500 Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) certification from Sarahjoy Yoga in Portland. Up through early 2020, she taught yoga at the YMCA in Phoenix, at local assisted living and independent living communities, and assisting the Adaptive Yoga class at Om Sweet Om in Talent, Oregon. Currently, she continues to teach yoga at the YMCA both in Phoenix and Medford, and she has twice weekly regular Zoom yoga classes as well as her AARP Adaptive/Gentle yoga classes.
