Celebrating Diwali for the South Asian Community in NJ with Chef Neelma Patel brought to you by AARP NJ and RWJUHS: Diwali, the festival of lights, is one of the most popular festivals of Hinduism celebrated over a 5 day period ultimately leading to the Hindu New Year. It symbolizes victory of light over darkness, virtue over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. In the lead-up to Diwali, celebrants will prepare by cleaning, renovating, and decorating their homes and workplaces with oil lamps and rangoli, which are traditional art patterns formed at the entrance of dwellings. During Diwali people wear new clothes, offer prayers to Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity and wealth, light fireworks, and partake in family feasts, where sweets, dry jar snacks and gifts are shared. We will be exploring a few of these snacks in this demonstration, with a healthy twist.
AARP will be providing resources on nutrition and healthy living to compliment the evenings presentation.
Participants will be provided a copy of Chef Neelma Patel’s recipes.
