We’ve inherited a narrative that retirement is a time to kick back and relax. But that alone doesn’t really add up to a full life. Once you retire, you will likely still have decades of life ahead. That’s a lot of time to fill.
In the U.S., adults over age 65 report that they spend more time pursuing leisure activities than any other age group. While that may sound relaxing, most leisure time for older people consists of solitary activities such as reading and watching TV. When planning for retirement, it’s worth thinking about how you will continue to live a productive, happy life; how you can stay engaged to ward off isolationism and loneliness; and how you can stay physically and mentally fit to truly enjoy this new life stage.
We have two great speakers to help us start to think about how we can live a full life later in life: Dr. Heather Fuller is an associate professor in the Human Development and Family Science Department at North Dakota State University; and Dr. Andrea Huseth is an assistant professor in the NDSU Department of Public Health, College of Health Professions.
