From 8pm to 9:30pm
McCarran Street Bridge Bat Colony – 8:00 pm Dog friendly and there are restrooms at Cottonwood Park.
It is estimated that 40,000 to 80,000 Brazilian Free-tailed bats live under the McCarran Bridge in Sparks during the summer months. This is your chance to see the awesome spectacle as they swarm out from under the bridge. There is no danger to people. They are going after the bugs, including mosquitoes. Bring a jacket and a flashlight for the walk back to your car.
Meet at Cottonwood Park – take East Greg to Spice Islands Drive and turn south. Drive until you get to the park, which is right along the Truckee River. We will meet at one of the tables close to the street at 8:00 pm and will plan to walk .7 miles on an asphalt path to the bridge. Sunset that night will be at 8:25 pm and the bats will start to swarm within a few minutes of sundown. It is a sight to remember.
