From 4pm to 5pm Hawaii Time
AARP Hawai’i Caregiver Wednesday
A Caregiver Story with Linda Coble and Michael Cheang
Linda Coble will share her personal story and key learnings about how to find a balance in the midst of caring for others. Participate in a facilitated question and answer session with Dr. Michael Cheang and get tips to help you find your own balance as a caregiver.
About the speakers:
Linda Coble was Hawaii’s first female television news reporter and anchor. Throughout her career, she broke through many glass ceilings and overcame countless challenges covering the news and dealing with gender politics. The biggest challenges of her life came when her husband of 33 years, Kirk Matthews, was diagnosed with cancer. Nobody is prepared for the caregiving experience. Like most spousal caregivers, she found herself reacting from moment to moment as she and Kirk battled challenges dealing with treatment of the disease itself, navigating finances and paperwork, and adjusting to the shifts in their own relationship. Every caregiver’s journey is unique – and yet the challenges are universal. We can all learn from each other.
Dr. Michael Cheang was a caregiver for his mother, who suffered from dementia. He teaches Family Resource Management at the UH-Manoa, and conducts family caregiver education workshops in the community. He will facilitate a discussion and chat among participants and provide tips to help you find your own balance.
