Highlighting Orlando

Honoring Black History and Heritage with AARP Orlando

Posted on 02/20/24 by Maryanna Antoldi

How do we pass down one’s history, one’s collective story? Generational tales are usually shared orally from parent to child – but the arts often convey deeper thoughts and emotions that words cannot, where self-expression can take any shape or medium. In celebration of Black History Month, AARP Orlando partnered with Solid Rock Community Church, Osceola County’s largest Black and Caribbean church, to do just that – use art as a way for a community to express themselves and their experiences in a safe and welcoming environment.

“Heritage and Health: Celebrating our Roots and Nurturing our Minds” was an outlet for all different types of creativity. Members of the Solid Rock community received a blank canvas and African mask, encouraged to paint their human experience in any style. However, congregants also took to the stage to express themselves through dance, poetry, reading, and active conversation. Generations of community members gathered in one room, using the power of art to create a collective tapestry of faith, perseverance, and hope – one brushstroke at a time. Take a look at some of their pieces below:

Did you know that art is also a way to improve your brain health? Stretching the creative side of your brain is just one of many ways to keep an active lifestyle and prevent the onset of dementia. Not only were congregants feeding their souls through art, but also their minds! And you can do the same.

AARP Orlando is so grateful to be a part of the Solid Rock and Osceola County communities. Central Florida is full of diverse individuals – all with incredible stories to share – and we are here to amplify your voice and make your experience heard.
