Hike Jefferson Barracks And Give Back to Veterans
AARP in St. Louis’ Trail Trekkers will host a 2.7-mile hike through Jefferson Barracks Park, 345 North Road, starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11. Hikers will explore the two trails in the park, along the Mississippi River.
“It’s an honor to walk that day with other veterans,” said Loretta Davis, 63, a Trail Trekker volunteer and Air Force veteran.
Hikers are asked to bring three nonperishable food or toiletry items to donate to the Jefferson Barracks Food Pantry, which serves active, reserve and veteran members of all military branches and their families. Volunteer leader Ann Shadowens, 74, said the pantry needs household items.
“Whatever you would use in your house, they could use in their house,” Shadowens said.
Ramen noodles, instant mashed potatoes, cereal and paper products are always in demand, but the pantry doesn’t need canned goods.
This is the first Trail Trekkers hike to coincide with Veterans Day, and Davis hopes it will become an annual event.
“We would like to make this hike a tradition, and I’d like to help make that happen,” she said.
