Help for San Antonians Caring for Family

Posted on 04/13/17 by Liz Steele

There is a special bond in families that is impossible to replicate. When folks become the caregiver for a family member, they face uncertainties and encounter questions about their new role.

But there’s help. There are resources available, and it’s important to get the support and encouragement they deserve.

“There are resources including public and private agencies and organizations to assist family caregivers,” says Sue Ellen Lewis, who has experience working with caregivers in San Antonio. “Caregivers need to ask for help… They traditionally have been reluctant to do so.”

One resource is an AARP workshop called CAREversations. These interactive events encourages family caregivers to share their experiences in a friendly, comfortable environment.

In addition to the connections you can make with other family caregivers, CAREversations give people valuable information on additional resources that are available to them. Attendees collaborate in small groups as a group facilitator guides the conversation. AARP provides a light snack and refreshments to attendees for the 90-minute family caregiving event. Space is limited to the first 40 RSVPS.

Whether you attend or not, remember: If you’re a family caregiver, you’re not alone in your caregiving journey.
