About the Event
Join AARP Vermont to explore the Clemmons Family Farm in Charlotte. The guided tour will include an indoor look at the historic Barn House and an outdoor stroll of the beautiful land.
About the Clemmons Family Farm: It is one of the rare African American-owned farms that remain in Vermont and the nation: just 0.4% of all farms in the United States are Black-owned. An official site on the Vermont African-American Heritage Trail, it was owned by Jackson and Lydia Clemmons for more than sixty years. In 2023, when the couple were 100 years old, they sold the farm to the nonprofit organization- Clemmons Family Farm, Inc., named in their honor- to protect the beautiful land and the legacy for future generations.
Historic Barn House Tour: The Barn House is actually two historic buildings: a granary and a cow barn, both built sometime between the late 1700's and the early 1800's. Jackson Clemmons joined the two buildings together more than 20 years ago, while he was in his 70's. Explore the fascinating history and future of the Clemmons Farm through exhibits, a presentation, and family storytelling. View beautiful African masks and textiles, and learn about African-American land ownership and loss over the past century. In addition to the guided tour you will have some time to look at the art, linger over the books on African art and culture, read the panels and posters, listen to storytelling audios and videos, look at the Adirondack views, enjoy the magical and calming ambiance of the Barn House, and just sit down and relax in a magical setting!
Tour of the Farm: We'll walk outside on the lawns to admire the views of the farm's open meadows and forest, and the Adirondack mountains, and we'll stop to greet the magnificent Black Locust Trees. Across the street, we'll take a peek inside the lower level of the beloved Big Barn to marvel at the recently restored fieldstone wall, originally built in the late 1700s.
